Shellac lemon 200g
Traditional finish for your guitar, mostly used on flamenco and classical guitars and renowned for its excellent sound qualities. Shellac provides a protection for your wood by building up thin layers of lacquer and can be brought to a high gloss. Shellac finish is hard and tough and resistant to abrasion and UV degradation. Shellac is a natural product.
The Shellac Lemon is not dewaxt and gives a transparant, warm golden-brown/amber color.
The Shellac SUper Blond is dewaxt and gives transparant, lightest yellow-brown/straw color
The brittle flakes are soluble in alcohol, slightly soluble in acetone and ether and insoluble in water.
Mixing ratio guideline: 75g of Shellac to 250ml alcohol. You can use this mixture for 3 months when kept in a closed container.
Use:
Prepare your mixture and stir regularely till the flakes are fully dissolved. This may take 24 hours. You can grind the flakes to help them dissolve quicker.
Ensure a well prepared surface, sanded to 400 grit and cleaned. Optionally fill pores with grain filler or use the Pumice technique.
Load your application pad with the Shellac mixture till it drips when you squeeze the pad. Start with up and down strokes on a small surface and rub till the Shellac is absorbed and a smooth even layer forms.
You can apply a few drops of mineral oil on the pad as a lubricant.
When the pad gets dry or sticky, reload and repeat the process. Work in sections till you completed a full round. Optionally spirit off the Shellac by rubbing the surface with drops of alcohol on your pad.
Leave to dry for 2 days and apply your next coat. 6 coats are recommended. Sand between coats with wet/dry sandpaper of 600 – 1200 grit.
Tip: The complete Kovax Oilfinish sanding system is also suited for Shellac.
